I wanted a job, I had the free time, I took the test. Initially I was hired
through a recruiter and was actually looking for something in Mechanical
Engineering. The recruiter looked at my CV, university grades (which included a
tech writing class), and I was an honours student in English classes in HS.
After talking to me for a while the recruiter asked if I would be interested in
writing. Willing to investigate the opportunities, I said "Why not."

I went home with a test for one company and got called the next day for the test
at my current employer.

While thinking/processing was certainly a part of the tests I took, both were
heavily in the domain that the jobs were. In fact, the first assignments I had
included the manuals from which the editing test came and procedures that were
asked for during the test.
