If you've never worked for a non-writer who feels he must
continually demonstrate that he knows more about writing
the writers do, again you've been lucky.

This seems to have little to do with the question whether tech writers are or arent't respected. It's the insecurity of an individual who has been promoted beyond his or her abilities and could happen in the same way wth about any office or industrial hjob (and a lot of others).

A general remark: I fail to understand the discussion on whether tech writers are respected or not. As a person, you are not respected or disrespected (except perhaps in extreme cases like beggars and queens) based on your job. Sure, you may get an initial bonus if you are a medical doctor or musical conductor, or you may be initially looked down upon if you are a street sweeper, but in the end your personality is what counts. If you are a creep or a doormat, people will not respect you, and if you are a decent, reliable guy or gal, they will usually.

Anyway, if you feel that too little respect is regarded to tech writing as a profession, there's about two things you can do:

- Ignore it and concentrate on gaining respect for you as a person (much recommended and likely to raise the respect for the profession at least locally).

- Leave the profession.

The notion that anything can be gained by complaining seems farfetched, though not as much so as the notion that PR by any professional body (STC or otherwise) could change this perceptibly.

Jan Henning
