I cannot see a single benefit in making the "new guy" uncomfortable. The
practice as described is inconsiderate, unthinking, and bad for business.
The fact that it's also very common (not only in manufacturing -- think
about medical residency) is no excuse. Any manager who tolerates it is
simply not thinking things through. And (by the way) it's also often used as
an excuse for gender harassment in manufacturing.

Jason posted a short descript on Rx and a young lad that replaced him. I
too worked in a manufacturing facility (two actually) before returning
to college in the late '90s. I am in no way condoning what the workers
were doing to Rex's replacement, but I wonder how much of it was related
to "shop talk." I remember new guys always got hazed to some degree when
they started. While the practice may be similar to a pack of wolves
sparring for dominance, it does have its benefits.

I have even seen in in some of the more "professional" jobs that I have
had and currently have. I think the practice goes way beyond replacing a
"favorite", and is more of an attempt to include the newbie in the group
by seeing how they react.
