I cannot see a single benefit in making the "new guy" uncomfortable. The
practice as described is inconsiderate, unthinking, and bad for business.
The fact that it's also very common (not only in manufacturing -- think
about medical residency) is no excuse. Any manager who tolerates it is
simply not thinking things through. And (by the way) it's also often used as
an excuse for gender harassment in manufacturing.

Dan,

I think Oja and Jason were merely recording their observations of the way human beings behave in this situation. I don't think either of them was condoning it as practical, ethical, or moral behavior. Hell, we do it here in techwr-l all the time with newbies. Doesn't make it right. But saying it is wrong and that managers shouldn't tolerate it doesn't really address the issue. We can legislate sanctions for behaviors, but we can't really legislate--or manage--those behaviors out of existence. I think the best we can hope for is a stand-off, where vigilant managers do what they can to dampen the negative behavior, using whatever tools work best for them, and inoculate the newcomer (think Branch Rickey/Jackie Robinson).
