Sounds kind of like a recent contract I snagged. I did get paid, but never
on time, and I had to nag the owner nearly daily for checks. (He had this
interesting habit of calling me "buddy" during phone conversations, like we
were good friends.)

In this case, unlike one where there were personality conflicts, I'd be
honest. Say they didn't pay you for your work: "I saw this as a great
opportunity for long-term growth where I could make a valuable contribution
to the company and their products and help in their success, but they didn't
pay me for my work."
