If that free sub and soda is provided to all of the writers and to all of the SMEs at the same time.

My husband worked for a company where lunches were provided every day to the whole company (50-60 people). Lunch was delivered from area restaurants, and most everyone would come sit at a long table when lunch came and eat their lunch together. While the talk was sometime about the football game the previous night, it was just as often (or more often) about the latest build of software, QA mentioning something to Tech Support and sales, etc. A lot of communication took place at these lunches, it was a time where people were able to see what was going on in the other departments, etc. The company was also physically set up such that there were only low partitions between people, and there were only a couple of physical offices with doors and walls. You could tell if it was a slow day over in Engineering Land just by looking up and seeing what was going on.

It sounds like you're husband's company had a pretty good strategy for encouraging communication and interaction, and the free meals were just a part of it. I'd love to work to work at a place like that!

But free food, snacks, and beverages are not, by themselves, anything more than a perq. I've worked at three different companies that handed out various kinds of workplace munchies, but didn't make it part of a larger "community" strategy. The result was exactly the opposite of what you describe. Instead of joining communal meals, people would take the goodies back to their private offices, and close the door. Level of interaction was not helped, and maybe even hurt.
