In the case of Yahoo groups, it is simple to go to their group page in your Web browser without answering the mail directly. There, you can generally tell quite easily if it's real and noncommercial or not.

For example, yesterday I created a group for Dallas/Fort Worth as part of the "Freecycling" movement (www.freecycle.org). This is a group of local Yahoo lists for various geographic areas in which people can post messages about items they want to give away to someone who can use them--either an individual or a non-profit organization. No spam to the lists is permitted, no trades, and nothing for sale.

As yet, I have merely informed several lists I'm on that it exists--and if they're in my area, inviting them to join.

However, if I maintained an address book of folks I've corresponded with, I would see no problem with sending them invitations to join...but it would not be "flashy HTML mail" (I *detest* HTML mail and its security problems!). At the same time, I cannot speak for the methods employed by others.

On a scale from one to ten regarding unsolicited email, surely this example must be no more than a one or perhaps a two--wouldn't you think?

David
