There was a post earlier in which the writer asked if
anyone had information about the situation behind
IBM's announcement that they are sending several
thousand jobs overseas.

Last night at an EFF meeting, I met a man who works
for IBM. He said they are offshoring the call centers
and product support functions for older products that
are nearing the end of their projected life cycle. (I
didn't think to ask which products.) Apparently, the
user base for those products has shrunk over the years
to the point where IBM figures it's no longer
cost-effective to pay American wages to the people who
support a shrinking market. They're still keeping the
development of new products and the support for other
products here.

That may sound good, but in the same conversation he
said the local IBM people have been told that everyone
is required to take off the last two weeks of this
month. I've seen and heard about that kind of forced
time off at other companies, and in each case they
were desperate to save enough money to keep the
company going for another quarter.
