I've encountered VMware plenty - never a conflict. But I've never had to
install or admin it.

Last year I needed additional computers for a job. I evaluated VMware
($400), but I ended up buying two P3/500 machines for $75 each.

If you can swing it, maybe you can get a second box to run VMware and all
your test environments. That way your workstation wouldn't be affected at
all.
