Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it used to be quite common
to refer to young children and animals as "it", even if they had a known
gender. And it's not necessarily personifying the robots to give them human
names--it could just be simplifying. It's easier to refer to "Stanley" than
to "Unirobot 65G37A/REV0003"--it could be the robot's "kennel name"--refer to
my signature below for "registered" vs. "kennel" names ;-)
