I can think of another way...

Technical knowledge is undeniably important. But I would argue that TOOLS
knowledge (IOW DTP software or whatever) quite often counts in ways Andrew
doesn't account for.

IME, I have been able to come up to speed VERY quickly on technical
knowledge because I don't have to suffer over the tools. This is in marked
contrast to a colleague of mine, a former engineer, who DIDN'T know the
tools (and doesn't seem inclined to learn).

Where I work, it's important to get it done correctly and get it done
quickly. If all deadlines are met, the company gets a bonus. If by knowing
the tools I can finish 13 documents to my colleague's 2, guess who is more
profitable (and more valued)--even though it could be argued that my
colleague should, by training, have a better grasp of the subject matter
than I do.
