I read "left alone" to mean "trusted to do a good,
professional job based on the experience, education,
and training of the the technical writer in question.

I agree, being part of a team is a requirement to get
a decent piece of documentation (manual, help, Web,
etc.) done.

But, I have experienced some situations where everyone
with a "management" title (including the "lawn
maintenance manager") is not afraid to micromange your
efforts based on their "superior" knowledge of "your"
profession ....

I would say, being "left alone" to practice your
profession is not the same as being separate from a
team .... You have to work with the team and it's not
your way or the highway, but things should be a
two-way street and your experience, education, and
training should be respected.

Or, maybe I missed the jist?
