A counter question is: why are there books out in
the market on software that comes with free
documentation; books that people buy paying good
money?

For the same reason people pay for gym memberships, even though jogging and pushups are free. When you pay for something "special" you are demonstrating that committment to yourself and to others.

Or, maybe they pirated the software.

Or, maybe they are using the software on a corporate site license and their employer didn't bother to distribute the manual.
