One way for STC to focus and add value would be to spend less effort on methods
and tools for content delivery and focus instead on strategies for creating
meaningful content. A lot of meaningful work could be done researching the needs
of actual users, ranging from meeting the needs of novice users to meeting the
needs of software developers.

STC conference topics might include a workshop where participants configure a
router using the provided documentation. Participants could then break into
sessions to discuss the effectiveness of the supplied documentation. It would
also be nice to hear from system admins who configure routers on a routine

Advocating for technical writers to receive additional education in the subject
areas that they are writing about would be a huge benefit, especially if
employers could be encouraged to pay for it. Identifying and promoting web sites
that provide remote educational opportunities would also be a big plus.

The continued focus on methodologies and tool use has really turned me off on
STC. There are numerous sources of on-line information that I can turn to for
technical information about specific tools and technologies. Moreover, these
existing sources of information are much more comprehensive and reliable.
