As a hiring manager, I don't credit or discredit associations and
memberships. It's something I expect to always see on a resume (if the
group the person belongs to is informal, for example) but I expect
there to be some kind of desire for continued growth on part of the
people I work with.

As an aside, when I hire, I Google each and every interesting
candidate. I look for list memberships, what they post (if anything),
and see where they've made their mark. It's quite helpful really. I've
stumbled across candidates who glitter and glow on paper, but when
I've found a mailing list they were on, I found nothing but a bunch of
stupid questions posted by them about things they claim they're very
good at, and from time periods that conflict with the dates on their
