I think the real danger is not that people will take their personal
prospects as indicative of the market, but that they may assume that
the market in general pre-ordains their personal prospects. While
"the market" does have an effect on the way you have to plan your
strategies and needs to be watched, it doesn't necessarily determine
your future as an individual. At least, that's the message I would
have Lyndsey take to her student audience.

Again, there's some truth to that. However, there are still many circumstances in which the state of the market might not affect you: For example, if you're working for old clients rather than new ones, or whether your new contracts come from word of mouth rather than activ searches by you. And if you have several long term prospects on the go, you'll probably take much longer to notice a downswing than someone who's unemployed.
