Typical screen resolution, these days (or, WHY IS CSS the way it is -- haven't we learned ANYTHING in ALL THESE YEARS no, guess we have not)?

Hi All:

I'm designing a website for some non-technical types (but not home users, business owners, primarily) and am wondering if you know what resolution the most prevalent monitors in medium size businesses are these days.

I've seen surveys from around 1998 that show that users mostly had 800 x 600, but that even then 1024 x 768 was fairly typical. And, yes, I know that there are lots of laptops out there, but laptops are often docked on people's desktops, and they aren't on the Internet as much as other PCs, so I'm not too worried about them.

I AM concerned that the people who seem to be filling out these surveys are often already in high tech, so I don't know how to interpret the data.

The reason this is pressing is that CSS is truly not accommodating of liquid screen sizes/resolutions. Pretty depressing really. CSS was obviously designed by aesthetic totalitarians (Style Nazis), I must say.

So anyway, anyone know where I can find good data on the Web (i.e., inexpensive but reliable) about who is using what resolution of monitor? I'm not interested in opt-in polls.
