I also have significant test experience - including
leading test planning efforts for mission critical
systems for the "star wars" missile program. It has
defintely been my experience that most testers
-especially systems-level testers - test whatever
happens to pop into their heads. To make up for this
deficiency, they create a whole bunch of these (mostly
ineffective) test cases.
As a former test engineer in a previous career life,
I would dispute your generalization about testing
[that testers try to impress by running up the test
count]....
