Yes, you probably learn more, but you may learn more than you care to.
The company I work for would rather have me ask questions than risk
messing up a half-million dollar machine by doing something stupid out
of ignorance.

Lots of software is risk-free and can be explored without consequence
other than time lost. The upside is a better understanding of a
product. Some products, probably mostly hardware (I could probably
make a case for some software), doesn't lend itself to exploration by
a novice. Let's see, today I'll just run out to the 777 on the tarmac
and test those emergency crash procedures to see if the steps are in
the right order.
