Franz-Josef Knelangen, responding to Amanda's "May I never do docs in Word on a Novell network again!", replied: <<Every app. that makes some use of temporary files has potentional probs with Novell - ask your sysadmin. Blame Word for Word issues ...>>

Too true, though it does work more smoothly with a Windows server network. However, it's well worth noting that you can configure Word to store its temp files anywhere you want, including your local disk. Open the Options (Preferences on the Mac), click the Files tab, and set the default location for these and your backup files. Works like a charm, and is particularly useful since you need to periodically delete these temp files. Word forgets, and when the number of files reaches critical mass, all kinds of bizarre behavior begins to occur.

<<I never open files on any network for editing. Check it out locally or make a local copy.>>

This used to be a fact of life, but I'm not sure it is any longer. Back a year and a bit ago, at a former employer, we did all our Word editing via the network with a task-management system managed via Outlook and Exchange server. There were occasional problems with file permissions, but rarely a problem with lost data, and those times I suspected the authors were responsible. (Yes, I know; software should protect us from our own errors.)
