Re: What notebook did you buy?
I'm not saying that you can't secure a Windows system. However, you are working against some poor architectural decisons.
No doubt. All of the home and small-business users in my universe (parents, sisters, kids, ex-wife, most friends) are now natted behind routers even if I had to purchase them. So far it's two Airport Extremes, two Airport Expresses and three Linksys WRT54Gs. No network-facing IPs, no ports I haven't opened.
They've also been migrated from Outlick and MSIE. Maybe they cheat sometimes, but my personal front-line tech support demands have been restored to the mundane. It was pretty bad for a few years there. No more.
These steps cut 99% of the noise. Software firewalls and anti-virus daemons are band-aids; NAT and basic prophylaxis are the cancer cure.
