Re: An e-mail-based poll re: TW roles
1) How in-tune with your company's business model are you, the Technical Writer?
Must understand it. Keep probing until I do. Whatever work I'm asked to do, I won't feel I'm doing it acceptably until I see the big picture.
2) How business savvy are you, and do you keep an open mind to
business demands in all aspects of your professional career?
Wildly, obsessively savvy. Companies are inhuman organisms -- that's a recognition, not a criticism. Care and feeding of business is my business, because they provide all of my work opportunities.
I could be smarter about my own business, however.
3) What do you do to feed the bottom line (and what is that bottom
line) of your respective company,
I'm usually a proposal manager, a consultant who can write and illustrate his ass off, and can manage documents. Winning contracts *are* the business. Jobs and profits depend on it. Direct line to the bottom line.
and is what you do in-line with what
your company ultimately wants?
Perfectly (or on the way to perfectly), or I'm doing it wrong.
My line's a little different, but it's still about explaining a solution, usually a technical one. That requires a voice that's persuasive, authoritative, and intimately informed about the system proposed and its advantages.
