I've given this some thought over the years, and I think we CAN'T work like
that at the beginning of the project. We simply don't have enough done at
that point to expend hours and hours on the project. Of course, by the time
we realize there were things we should have done weeks ago to prevent or
lessen the deadline crunch, it's too late. Thus the mantra we all chant
"Okay, NEXT TIME I'm going to..."

There's one good thing though -- the deadline marathons have motivated me to
improve my project management skills and teach better project management to
my students. At least if there's going to be an all-nighter at the end of
the project, it's not going to be entirely my fault.

Now this reminds me of what always seems to happen to me. When the
deadline looms and I'm behind, I start burning rubber to catch up -- and
I always say to myself, "Now if you'd work like this at the BEGINNING of
the project, you wouldn't be in this position." But I never seem to be
able to do that.
