Writing a functional specification is not easy. Here are some tips:

1. Try to get help from someone in your project team who has written
or contributed to at least one functional specification.

2. Find a template from a successful recent project. Identify the
different sections of the template and the purpose/intent of each
section. Then document what you've identified. This will form part of
your plan.

3. Identify an effective way to graphically represent the functions of
the system / software you're specifying. You may want to talk with
someone in your team to find out what has worked for them on past
projects. Options include: the Unified Modeling Language (state
diagrams, class diagrams, use case diagrams, and others), the
Object-Process Methodology, data flow diagrams, etc.
