Am I being unprofessional, or would this be considered "looking out for my

It's difficult to be objective where there are established ties and a personal investment in a body of work.

I think this transitional contract extension is best approached as a new contract.

What are the services to be delivered, their scope, the term and the rate? Approach it as a new piece of business. That's what it is, though flesh-and-blood humans can be forgiven for not wanting to see it that way, not wanting colleagues to have to do business dispassionately.

Seems like it's only an "extension" in the sense that you'll stay a little longer at the same place with the same people and project. It's valuable to the client that you even exist to fill this role. But if you weren't available for an extension, the client would need to contract for these educational services from scratch. So, in some reasonable way, I would shade things toward a fresh agreement.

Good contracts, like fences, make good neighbors.
