I want sincerely to thank everyone who tried to help, both on list and
off. Mike O. wins the prize today, though. He came up with the one key
piece of information that solved the problem--at least the network problem.

The key was to enable the firewall on the router and disable it
everywhere else. I finally have a working network, with full visibility
on all machines, for the first time in almost a year.
