I didn't know about the TLDs, but I did know about the second-level
domains example.com, example.net.and example.org which are registered
specifically for example use (and mentioned in that same RFC. I've
used them extensively throughout the years.

Indeed. I have a friend who is fortunate (??) to have snagged the
domain acme.com, which a lot of people seem to use for examples. He
gets a lot of traffic. A lot.
