IMO, if an end-user is merely reading the document, they certainly don't care how you put it together.

If an end-user is going to update the document, and they have a clue about what styles are and how to use them, they should care. And if you care to help them, you'll have some sort of info in the document to minimize the invevitable mangling and mutilation.

If a clueless end-user is going to update the document, your styles etc. won't confuse them any more than Word itself will, and they will of course create an absolute mess in their ignorance.
