And I forgot the most important part...
How you use Word will mostly have an affect on how you create an effective end result. How hard do you have to work to do it? How painful is it? Are you happy with the result, or have you made too many uncomfortable compromises?
When you make the most of what Word will let you do, the main result is that you are better able to do a better job, faster. And if that results in something end-users appreciate, so much the better.
IMO, if an end-user is merely reading the document, they certainly don't care
how you put it together.
If an end-user is going to update the document, and they have a clue about what
styles are and how to use them, they should care. And if you care to help them,
you'll have some sort of info in the document to minimize the invevitable
mangling and mutilation.
If a clueless end-user is going to update the document, your styles etc. won't
confuse them any more than Word itself will, and they will of course create an
absolute mess in their ignorance.
