Hi john,

you have a point, but communication only takes place by means of a
medium - the English language in this case, and as writers of some
sort, we tend to take an interest in how and why certain words are
used. It's not so much being gatekeepers of the language as being
gatekeepers of our own writing. Macluhen's hyperbolic statement "the
medium is the message" applies as much to language as any other
medium: a language will colour with different, maybe even unintended,
nuances whatever is said in it. Besides, its impossible to learn how
to communicate well without looking fairly deeply into the language.

take it easy
(apologies for the late response, got taken out by flu, then had to
catch up on some work)
