Kirk,

According to MW 11th ed, the closed version, "closeout" is used for "clearing out by a sale... of the entire stock" or for a product bought in such a situation.

All other uses are the open form, "close out" including "to bring to an often rapid or abrupt conclusion." Garner's doesn't list this question, nor does Fowler's, and I don't find it in Chicago 15.

So maybe go with MW -- it sounds like you might definitely use the open form, "close out". To be pedantically literal.

Hope this helps a little.

Best,

heidi

I'll spare you the preliminary apology for asking this question:

Is *Project Close Out* or *Project Closeout* correct? I see both, and I
have no style manual to settle this question. My dictionary doesn't
help, and I decided it was time to appeal to a higher authority. On
Goggle, Close Out gets 907M hits, and Closeout gets 24M. Does that mean
that Project Close Out wins or that a billion people CAN be wrong?

Best regards,
Kirk
