I worked with a word document that was 1100 pages, it was not a technical document, but a text book I edited...

;-)

It stuck to a rigid template of minimal styles (IIRC there were under 15 paragraph styles), used minimal images, section breaks only as needed, and I had all auto-anything options in Word disabled, saving often, and cleaning temp directories before opening and after closing the file, every time.
