I'd say the obvious first one to try is: www.openoffice.org
Their software is free (in both senses) and many people
prefer it to Microsoft products. There are arguments both
ways (see the archives for some of them), but since it is
free, you might as well devote a day or two to testing if it
meets your needs. Please post your conclusions.

Framemaker is another obvious alternative, widely used
for large documents and complex formatting.
