The Basic Edit window appears.
The Basic Edit window displays.
Also, if you can tell me WHY one is better, that will help me understand
the issue. Thanks in advance.

Normally for US-only docs, I would use "appears."

The Basic Edit window opens.

_Appears_ appears magical to some readers. "The rabbit appears." That is, rather than seeing the usage as normal, they might see it as paranormal <g,d,r>

_Displays_ is generally construed as transitive, meaning that it needs an object. "The window displays your name, address, and social security number in a large, bold font that can be read by strangers twenty feet behind you." Yes, there are intransitive meanings of _display_: The peacock displays to attract a peahen. However, that is not the sense you want to apply to a virtual window. _Opens_ is nearly always the best choice.
