Normally for US-only docs, I would use "appears."

_Appears_ appears magical to some readers. "The rabbit appears." That is, rather than seeing the usage as normal, they might see it as paranormal <g,d,r>

_Displays_ is generally construed as transitive, meaning that it needs an object. "The window displays your name, address, and social security number in a large, bold font that can be read by strangers twenty feet behind you." Yes, there are intransitive meanings of _display_: The peacock displays to attract a peahen. However, that is not the sense you want to apply to a virtual window. _Opens_ is nearly always the best choice.
