Methinks that Mr. Fetzner does not like what he reads (hears, sees) in the news, ergo, the news media is biased. Of course it is, just as there is an obvious bias in Fetzner's comments. He doesn't like the "liberal" media, so therefore the Journalism schools are at fault. (He may have missed the fact that newspapers are businesses.) I think Ed Gregory put it correctly when he brought up Rush (I ain't a drug addict) Limbaugh, etc. Many writers (reporters and technical writers) strive for the truth. Sometimes it's right in front of us and that makes the day easy. Sometimes, you have to wade through the swamp to find the truth.

I've been both a technical writer and a reporter, and I have met very few individuals in either group that are the slackers that Fetzner complains about. Most are hard working, ethical and professional. The take it personally when they get the facts wrong and they strive to be as impersonal as possible. To say that the journalism profession need saving from the technical writing profession shows ignorance of both. Some of the best technical writers I've ever worked with had journalism degrees. To smear a profession in order to justify a political position is wrong, pure and simple.
