Could you provide some context, please? Are you evaluating
this group as:

1) I've been offered the management position and need to determine what I'd be getting myself in for
before I say yes.

2) I've taken the management position (either by choice
or by chance) and need to determine what to do next

3) I have a new manager and am trying to influence how he/she views our department

BTW, if you do find an actual book on how to do the above,
please share.
