I only buy into this so much.

My quarterly bonus is based on the next quarter. However, I've chosen
longterm goals, but have broken them down into quarterly pieces.

Example...I included, as a goal for the next three quarters some
outside classes. In this quarter, I defined it for UNIX course
registration, next quarter to attend the class, and the next quarter
to create some internal guides.

I defined as another goal to convert the department from FM to
Structured FM using DITA. This is going to take a whole year to
accomplish the goal, so I have portions defined for each quarter.

Unfortunaely, it is also easier to plan 3 months in advance than to
have a plan defined for a whole year.
