Ah, I think I may know the problem. Do you have Normal something other than the default? If you do, then this screws up any table styles based on normal. I had to reset normal to Times New Roman 10 point to get table styles to work right. Was quite the pain.

That said, one of the cures for a paragraph that says it is in one style but the style doesn't seem to take is to remove all character formatting (via Clear Formatting). If you've tried that and the style still says one thing and looks like something else, you're seeing the Spooky Table Styles bug.
