Along with what's already been recommended I would suggest a robust
document comparison tool and an outliner for brainstorming.

I use Inspiration, which despite its heritage and marketing spin as an
educational tool works really well as an outliner. Others have other
favorite outliners.

An 1994 book called Essential Software for Writers, by Hy Bender, offers
a useful review of categories, within its time horizon.
