I think the difference here is your previous post in
which the "writing test" seemed to be less of a means to gauge writer skill than some sort of a behavioral evaluation trick. If you really want the former, what's
the problem with telling the candidate up front that
there will be a brief skills test? If it's the latter,
a much more effective game would be to have your boss
interrupt the interview to chew you out over some
fictional document issue and then see how the candidate
handles *that.* It's no less manipulative than the
"surprise writing test."

From my POV as both manager and candidate, BTW.
