I've had friends, family, neighbors, and acquaintances, come up to me
and say, "So, you're a technical writer now, eh?"

They will squint and cock their heads while they're looking at me.
They're not quite sure what a technical writer does.

However, when I nod and say, yes, I'm doing documentation (which is
correct), they understand immediately.

The answer I give to people that aren't in IT is "I write books nobody
reads about software nobody uses."

I also do proposal writing, process analysis, software design, UI
design, copyediting, software testing, training, lifecycle development
process audits, consult for other teams, desktop support, document-
and hard-drive recovery, network troubleshooting, laserprinter repair,
make coffee, unclog toilets - pretty much everything in the software
development process (and some things that aren't!) except the actual
writing of code, although every now and then I have to do some of that
~too~. But if you say "software lifecycle development process" to
somebody not in the industry, their eyes generally glaze over after
'lifecycle', so they get the first answer.
