In my company, many of the tech writers are A.K.s, but I work in the Silicon Valley. The dot com bust drove many people out of tech writing; many more were warned off. We do have some young people, too. Many of the oldsters (like me) are on a second career after bowing out of engineering, while many of the babies moved directly into tech writing after studying engineering in school. I should note that it is extremely difficult to be hired as a tech writer here unless you have one of the backgrounds; that is, you either need to have studied science, Comp Sci, or engineering in school, or you need to have worked as a SW or HW engineer, or both.

There are many members of STC in the Lone Star Community (Dallas/Fort Worth) who are under 40, including myself. In fact, our current Prez is under 30!

Is there a new generation of tech writers? When I go to Boston STC meetings,
almost everyone seems to be in my age range (40 and up).
Just wonderin'
