Yes, I've actually gone to the trouble of replacing the Style list with a custom style list that showed only the allowed styles.
The drawback is that I rely on that style list to show me the style of the current selection. I know I can simulate this action as well by trapping the selection change event, but I'm loath to go to that extent.
The toolbar and button approach isn't too bad either. Jack Lyons produced an "Author's" template with a very coherent arrangement of buttons and commands.
