What I normally do is create a style called "Procedure" that is the same
paragraph level and a similar design as Heading 3. I create a style called
"Procedure Intro" that is the "style following paragraph" after Procedure
and is the same as "Body Text" with the exception of the style that follows.
I create a style called "Step" that follows Procedure Intro. Step uses
outline numbering. When I feel like engaging in something tedious, I set-up
the outline numbering to advance to the next style with Tab, i.e., Step 2,
Step 3, Step 4, etc. Since Microsoft "fixes" things, I frequently need to
restart the numbering although I set up the numbering to restart with the
options available in Word. Word gets jacked-up anyway, but I can get the
results that I want from the numbering.

Lauren

Subject: word numbering best practice question

Hi,

Numbering in Word (2003)--if reference fields and VBA are not an
option--what's the best way to set up list numbering for styles that are
used for procedures and not for headings (using the Word GUI)?

For example, should I use outline numbering for procedural lists (Outline
Numbered tab versus Numbered tab)? Would this affect outline view in any
way? Would using the Outlined Numbered tab be less robust than using the
Numbered tab?

Cheers.
