I'm skeptical of the necessity of doing this at all - and not all that
inclined to trust people whose first action is to password-protect all the
documents they can lay their hands on. Although I know how to do what you
want using VBA, I'd like to ask about your reasons first.

There are other perfectly good ways of making sure that originals are
protected and backed up. What precisely are you trying to achieve here?
