You know, I just thought of something. Depending on your needs, Apache Forrest might be a better XML-based solution than DocBook. It's DTD uses tags familiar to those who are used to HTML. It can be extensively, and in some cases fairly easily, modified. It produces both a slick Web-based output and an optional customizable PDF output. It's also well supported and has an active and helpful forum. You still need a tool to write the documents. XMLSpy works great and again, there is, or at least was, a free edition. But Apache Forrest might be a nice intermediate step for people to get into XML with a minimal amount of hassel while opening the door for others that want to dig deeper.

I'm not saying everyone should use Apache Forrest, but it might be just what someone needs if DocBook is out of scope for their projects. Here's the link:
