I don't remember if there are references to other studies, but I know there
is a section in Kostelnick and Roberts' book Designing Visual Language that
talks about font tone. Schriver's book Dynamics in Document Design also has
a short discussion about research on typography that might be a good place
to start of those who are interested in researching further.
