Is this another one of those terms that used to mean something, but
has gone sideways?

In all my previous experience, getting "blackballed" has had two meanings:

- the army meaning (which involves shoe-polish or other very black
substance applied to tender parts of the victim's anatomy, and causing much
discomfort in the removal - a hazing ritual or worse)

- the business meaning, which was much the same as blacklisting, which is to
say, having one's name sent around among industry insiders to ensure that
"you'll never work in this town again!" Shunning. Defaming.

Thus, the important, and really nasty, part was not so much that one was
fired, but that the firing party used influence to keep you unemployed (or
unable to do business) by as many of their industry "club" as they could
influence.

Originally from a method of voting that used white balls (or pebbles, or
counters) tossed into a pot to indicate favor toward a candidate or
proposal, or else black balls (or other token) to show disfavor.

Did I miss a portion of the original post where the firing manager was
defaming the good name of the poster to all the other hiring managers in
their area or their industry?

Kevin
