Ideally, your goals should be internal and not based on comparisons
of your perceived advancements vs those of others. If you decide
that $X is enough salary and you're not willing to sacrifice another 20
hours a week of your time to make $1.2X, the fact that someone else
does it shouldn't affect your level of job satisfaction. Likewse, if you
decide that managerial duties and responsibilities are not for you, the
fact that someone opts for them should be a non-issue, regardless of
their experience or even to some extent their abilities vs yours. The
person who was less capable than you as a writer when at the same
level as you could turn out to have the planning abilites and the
willingness to do battle on your behalf that will end up making your
life better in your role of choice.
