NOW it's getting interesting.
Advancement means different things to different people. For one person,
it might be "writing API documentation, near-flawless, in under a week",
while for another it might be "managing the people that produce the API
documentation". For a third person, it might very well be "making in
excess of $X per year".
When I was young and stupid and in my 20s I thought the only way to
"advance" was to be a manager. That's what all the "tests" they gave
you at work showed back then - I think being a team player was just a
vague concept then. So I did the management training thing and even
managed people for a while. And I hated it. I hated that my reputation
was based on what other people did, it wasn't a direct reflection of my
work, my writing, my knowledge. At another job, there were a couple of
writers and we needed a manager for the group. The powers that be asked
me if I wanted the position. I said no, but knew someone who would be
great.
For me, it wasn't a matter of how I felt if someone less experienced got
promoted. I don't define myself by my career level. For me, it was a
matter of doing what I love - writing. And with experience I got the $X
bucks too.
